Biography

Born on March 5, 1959 in a farmer's family of Shri Prem Singh Chouhan and Smt Sundar Bai Chouhan at village Jait in Sehore district, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan is a Gold medalist in Masters of Philosophy from Barkatulla University, Bhopal. A true son of the soil, he can easily identify himself with the socio-economic concerns of farmers, villagers and commoners. Inclusive development and prosperity for all is the life mantra of Shri Chouhan.

A true patriot and the torchbearer of Indian values, Shri Chouhan is a compassionate leader right from an early childhood. His leadership skills first came to fore when he was elected as the President of Model Higher Secondary School Student's Union in 1975. He participated in underground movement against Emergency and was imprisoned in 1976-77 and on several other occasions for various political agitations and public causes.

Shri Chouhan is a volunteer of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since 1977 and since then he has been an active social worker and a popular leader.

He was elected to the state legislative assembly from Budhni constituency in 1990; in 1991 he entered the 10th Lok Sabha for the first time from Vidisha constituency. During this period, he has been holding several responsible positions in the organizations such as Akhil Bharatiya Keshariya Vahini, All India Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was re-elected to the 11th Lok Sabha from Vidisha and during this period he was an active member of various Lok Sabha committees on Urban and Rural Development, Human Resource Development, Hindi Salahkar Samiti and Labour and Welfare.

Shri Chouhan had a third successive victory into 12th Lok Sabha elections in 1998 and fourth consecutive victory into 13th Lok Sabha in 1999. During this period, he was an active member of Committees on Agriculture and Public Undertakings. He also held the responsibility as the National President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha from 2000 to 2003. He was also the Chairman of House Committee (Lok Sabha) and National Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party.

Continuing his service to the society and people of Madhya Pradesh, Shri Chouhan was elected for the 5th time to the 14th Lok Sabha in 2004. He was member of committee on Agriculture; member of joint committee on Offices of Profit; National General Secretary of BJP; Secretary of Parliamentary Board and Secretary of Central Election Committee. He also headed Housing Committee of Lok Sabha.

Shri Chouhan was appointed President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Madhya Pradesh in 2005 and on November 29, 2005, was elected as the Chief Minister of the state. The following year he won the by-election to the Assembly from Budhni.

In the year 2008, he led the party to its second consecutive victory in the state elections and assumed the office of the Chief Minister on December 12, 2008 for the second term.

Shri Chouhan is a champion of women's cause. As a Chief Minister, he spear heads several initiatives for creating a positive social attitude towards the girl child, improving the socio-economic security of women and their health and well-being. Some of his noteworthy initiatives are 'Beti Bachao Abhiyaan' and the 'Ladli Laxmi Yojana' launched in 2006. Following the success of the Ladli Laxmi Yojana in Madhya Pradesh, six other states have emulated it.

A firm believer in inclusive growth for all, Shri Chouhan has been striving to create an empowered Madhya Pradesh by focusing on providing better education facilities, providing better employment opportunities to the state's youth. He has also been actively engaged in activities for upliftment of scheduled castes, struggle against injustice and slums rehabilitation and promoting social harmony.

Shri Chouhan is the recipient of the Krishi Karman award for the year 2011-12 from the President of India. Madhya Pradesh registered the highest growth in food grain production in the country beating Punjab and Haryana. The state has recorded the highest economic growth in 2013-14 amongst all Indian states for gross state domestic product, according to the Central Statistical Organization.

Taking note of his exemplary work, the World Bank invited him to address a talk on women's social empowerment and improvement of access to services and livelihood in Madhya Pradesh. First of its kind in the country, Madhya Pradesh Public Service Guarantee Act has received a special award in the United Nations Public Service Award for 2012 for excellence in public service.

Married to Smt. Sadhana Singh, father of two sons, Kartikey and Kunal, Shri Chouhan finds time to listen to his favourite songs and watch movies from his busy schedule. He takes a keen interest in spiritual literature and debates and discussions with like-minded people and friends. A sports buff, he enjoys playing kabaddi, badminton and volleyball.

A tall public figure with a relentless drive to dedicate his life to the service of the society, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan is one of the few young Indian politicians, who are making a positive difference to the polity and growth of our country.
